5th Sunday after Epiphany 2026 Homily – Bp. Geronimo

Kingdom tide in the past was so important because it sets the course for a new week ahead of us. Matthew 5:13-16 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” When we do this, we shall be great in the Kingdom of God. God shows us things in the Word when we are ready to accept it.

So much darkness and division are around, and we are quick to judge. If we are the light of the world and there’s darkness, then we should go to the light. How do we practice being the light of the world and salt of the earth? Here are two things:

1. Every thought is a deed.

2. Your prayer has tremendous power.

Every thought we emit can either help or harm someone. Jesus said, “Thou shalt not kill.” But if you are angry with someone, you have already committed murder. “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” But if you have lustful thoughts, it’s like you have already done the deed. Every thought you emit contributes to a stream of opinions. The longer we meditate on that, the bigger the effect will be, and it will affect others. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything, worthy of praise, think about these things.

Man is a spirit, soul and body. Jesus should be Lord of our soul. Instead of anger, we should have calmness. Instead of unforgiveness, we should have forgiveness, instead of jealousy, we should rejoice with others when they are blessed. We should not have hatred or resentment. We should not treasure resentment in our hearts. When we emit this thought, it will affect others. But the resurrected soul changes from glory to glory.

Adam lived 939 years. When he was walking with God, he was “co-creating” with God in naming all the animals. We have an opportunity to create something good every day. Thoughts are so powerful that they can create destiny and character. Our minds are capable of transmitting these into deeds. Our prayers have tremendous power. A powerful and quiet life comes when we pray for our leaders. We become “partners” for the ones we pray for. But we should pray for God’s will to be done. If only 10 people could do this regularly and consistently, this could really lead to something. The prayer of the “light of the world” availed much. Among all of God’s creation, it is only humans who can say no. The sun rises diligently in the morning. It does not say no. The moon comes out at night, it does not say no. The animals make specific sounds they were created with. The dog barks, the cow moos, they do not say no, they won’t do it. Do we want Jesus to come back? Are we working towards that goal? Or are we the ones causing the delay. We are the light of the world and salt of the earth. May we be true to our commitment in proclaiming the Gospel.
