3rd Sunday in Lent 2026 Homily – Abp. Hines
This is the third Sunday of Lent. God has given us perfection, but somehow, we have not really understood this. Jesus told His disciples to go out and preach about God’s Kingdom. The Season of Lent should prepare us to receive the fullness of God’s perfection. We’ve become selfish because the enemy has deceived us into believing we should only think about ourselves. Moses was sent by God to deliver the children of Israel out of Egypt, with God’s help. But after they were set free and have gone into the wilderness, they started complaining and murmuring and wishing they were all back in Egypt. Isn’t this just like us today? We were in slavery, but God sent Jesus to set us free. And yet, many times we still want to go back to where or what we were before. The children of Israel were complaining about the fact that there was no water. And Moses, through God’s power struck the rock for water to gush out.
We see Jesus at this time traveling to Galilee. He had to go through Samaria, which was the quickest way. The Jews however, and the Samaritans were not in good terms. When He entered Samaria, He saw a well and sat down to rest for he was tired. This well was known as Jacob’s Well. His disciples had gone into the city to buy food. As He was seated there, a woman came to the well. Jesus asked her to draw out water for Him to drink. She was shocked that a Jew would even dare speak to her, a Samaritan woman. Jesus said, “if you knew who you were speaking to, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water, and that you may never thirst again.” The Samaritan woman surmised that He must be a prophet. And Jesus instructed her to go back to the city and get her husband so that they may get this water from Him. She then said, “but I don’t have a husband.” Jesus replied, “you are right when you said you do not have a husband, for you have had five husbands, and the one you are living with now is not your husband. “She was shocked that Jesus even knew her life. Jesus told her, “There will come a day where one will neither worship on the mountain or in Jerusalem. But you will worship in spirit and in truth.
When news had already been spread out by the Samaritan woman concerning Jesus, the men of Samaria went to Him and even invited Him to stay with them. Why? Because Jesus never condemns people. He did not condemn the Samaritan woman. He never argued nor debated with her. He offered her life instead.
All these things happened even before Jesus went to the cross. He does not judge the sinner. He does not condemn. Jesus gave us the gift of life. He gave us what we need to survive. We have been saved. He paid the price to set us free. To each of us, He has given a measure of Faith. We cannot say we do not have faith because He has given us faith. God will never leave us nor forsake us. We may be going through personal battles, but God will never fail us. We should not run away from our problems because He has given us perseverance which builds character. We should be thankful to God. Proven character brings hope, and hope does not disappoint. Jesus died for all mankind, even the ungodly. And He gave us holiness and righteousness.
We should be listening to God and meditating on His Word. We must put our faith and confidence in Him. And we need to use what God has given to us.
