Easter Sunday Homily – Abp.Hines
Today is Easter Sunday. Time was when Easter was celebrated the way it was supposed to be celebrated. Today, we hardly see this happening. During Holy Week, people run to the resorts, away from the city to have fun. Many malls continue to be opened. Money seems to be the most important thing of all. But we know Easter to be a very special day. Imagine, the Son of God, dying on the cross, bearing all the sins of mankind for our redemption. We have much to learn. We forget what Christ has done. Matthew 12:40 “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 16:21 “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” Even before His death, this has been shared. He was going to rise up on the third day. He knew that He had to pay the price.
Before Easter came, the women had prepared spices to bring to the tomb to anoint Him. As they approached the burial site, they saw that the big rock had been rolled away. They became very anxious and looked inside the tomb but the body was not there. Two angels appeared before them and said, “why are you seeking the living among the dead?” The women went back to the disciples and told them what had happened. Only Peter went there to check. When he found the tomb empty, he too was amazed.
Today, the same question is asked of us, “why are we seeking the living among the dead?” Do we not trust God to be the source of everything? If Christ is not in the church, then it’s useless. When we go to church, Christ should be an image of deliverance, and of blessings. Easter should be a proclamation in our lives that we have been set free. We must fulfill the gift He has given us. Should we be like the women who prepared spices when Christ is no longer there? Christ has finished the job.
Christ was resurrected. His body and soul were united and brought back to life. We should not fear death. Right now, we may be in the Sabbath, but one day, God will bring it to completion. In the presence of Christ, there should be fullness of peace and joy. Christ had told the disciples several times that He would rise again in three days, and He did. When He tells us He will not leave us nor forsake us, He means it. When He tells us He will supply our needs, He will do it. We are blessed because of His resurrection. The meaning of Easter should be seen in the new life we live. When Christ said “it is finished,” He had accomplished the task. His promise to us is, He’ll come back for us one day. God has the whole world in His hands. May Easter be a great source of hope for us.
