5th Sunday of Easter Homily – Abp. Hines

Each week we are given insights and directions from God on how to live our lives according to what He has intended us to live. Today’s Gospel is so powerful that God would speak to us in such a way. John 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled: believe in God, believe also in me.” We are the controlling factor of our hearts. If we find ourselves in trouble, it is us who are at fault because of our choices. Hebrew 6:17-19 “In the same way God, desiring even more to demonstrate to the heirs of the promise the fact that His purpose is unchangeable, confirmed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to hold firmly to the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and reliable and one which enters within the veil.”

God took out the heart of stone and put in a new heart of flesh. We are the controlling factor. Our Christianity is not us; it is Christ and the sacrifices He made for us. He had told Thomas, “If I said it, then it must be true.” When we go through trials, God has not left us. He is still there. We need to hold on to His promises. What our hearts hold on to, it will come.

When Israel needed a king, God gave them David. In 30 years, they got a King. God made a covenant with man, and it is unchangeable. It is set; it is done. We need to hold on to this hope. What He promised He would do; He would do it. John 14:2 In My Father’s house are many dwelling places. And if not so, would I have told you⁺ that I am going to prepare a place for you. He was leaving the earth to prepare this. The Greek word for “dwelling places” (or mansions) found in John 14:2 is (monai), which is the plural form of monē (Derived from the verb menō (to remain or abide), it refers to an abode, room, or staying place. It signifies a permanent dwelling or a temporary rest station in a journey. The Father represents love, compassion, restoration. He is forgiving. Christ forgave all on the cross. He did not choose just one particular race; He died for all. We were created in His image and likeness. When the enemy deceived us, God sent Christ to redeem us. This shows how much He loves us. He wanted to make certain that we must believe in Him for He is the truth. Jesus came as a baby. He had to go through all the training from God before He finally received His Kingship. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one goes to the Father except through Me.” This gives us so much peace in our hearts if we truly believe this.

If Christ has God in Him, and Christ is in us, then God is with us. God does not lie. “Let not your heart be troubled.” We have the confidence and assurance in Him. It may seem for a moment, that we don’t see any evidence, but we need to hold on and keep His truth in our hearts. Christ is us, the hope of glory. We should trust God. 2 Corinthians 3:18 “But we all, with unveiled faces, looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” We look to Christ because He is the forerunner.
