“Our Father” Is The Pattern Of How To Pray

July 27, 2025 Readings: Genesis 18:20-33 Colossians 2:6-15 Luke 11:1-13 Theme: “Our Father” Is The Pattern Of How To Pray In many cases, when we read the scriptures, our actions do not coincide with what we have read. Jesus Christ came with a purpose. He knew that the Father had set all His plans in place and He came to fulfill the Father’s will. He often communicated with the Father. Matthew 6:9-13 “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

Basically, the “Our Father” is a pattern by which we should pray. “In this manner you shall pray.” Christ was subject to the Father, which is why we should always seek direction from the Father. We need to see God as our Father. We should ask Him what He wants us to do and pay attention to what He desires for our lives. Most of the time, we ask Him for what we think is right for us. But we should get instructions from Him. He is not our Servant. We live in a society where the father is not in charge. We do our own thing. Jesus and God the Father had a relationship. There was unity between them. Galatians 4:4 “But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law.” Jesus identified Himself with man when He became flesh. Why was He so successful in His life on earth? Because He followed everything that God instructed Him. He overcame every obstacle. If we are sons of the Father and the Spirit dwells in us, we are called to love and trust God. That should be our attitude. However, we have separated ourselves from God in prayer and have not been praying according to His will. Like Jesus, we should spend time in prayer. This doesn’t mean that we should be down on our knees every time with our hands folded. This means we are in a prayerful attitude at all times, no matter where we are.

The prayer Jesus teaches us is also asking God to give us our daily bread- the Bread of Life. The same Bread that gives life to the world. “Lead us not into temptation.” God will not lead us to anything evil. If we find ourselves being tempted, He gives us the ability to not succumb to it. We are to keep His name Holy and Sacred. God forgives our sin as we forgive others’ sin. We are certain of His Holiness, His source of Power, His Love, His Goodness. So when we get into trouble, it is not His fault but it’s because we caused it upon ourselves if we do not obey Him. Here are the four steps we need to understand: 1. How to pray 2. Persistence in prayer 3. Certainty of a positive answer 4. The Holy Spirit is the Source Jesus is the only truth. The Lord’s Prayer is meant to live the good life. It sets the pattern for our lives. If we go to Him, He will let us know. We have an inheritance in His Kingdom. We are here to cause the world to become like Christ. We are His sons; He is our Father.
