Holy Trinity Sunday 2026 Homily – Abp. Hines
Today is called Trinity Sunday, proclaiming the unity of God and the unity of the church and mankind. One of the reasons of Trinity Sunday is that we would know who God is and who we are in Him. In doing so, we will not find ourselves wavering. God’s creation is awesome. Just observe the seas and land, the sun, moon and stars. From the beginning He had already given us security, hope and love. “In the likeness of ourselves, let us create man.” The true essence is the word, “us.” He was referring to the fullness of the Godhead, the Trinity, the fullness of His being.
Paul said in Acts 7:48 “However, the Most High doesn’t live in temples made by human hand.” The Father, Son and Holy Spirit created everything for our good. He gives all life to all things. Acts: 17:26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.
In our arrogance, we want to do our own thing. But Psalm 150 says we should praise the Lord. “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” In Him we live and move and have our being. We lack for no good thing. In creation, He made sure everything was made first before He created man so that man could enjoy all the blessings. When God finished His creation, He rested and evaluated all that He had done and said, “it was very good.” He set the 7th day to be sanctified. He was literally telling us to rest on this day to give honor to Him and assess what we have done for 6 days. God is so amazing. What God promised, He will fulfill. He does not lie. When we make a commitment, we should fulfill it. Acknowledging that He is the source of everything. The air we breathe, the provisions we have in our lives. We must understand who we are to be like and that is the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. If we reject what God has created us to be, we will not be able to enjoy His fullness. If we want a good life, we have to ask what it is He desires for us.
After Easter and Pentecost, we should really be able to believe who we are meant to be in our lives. 2 Corinthians 13:5-6 “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test.” We are to live in unity. If the church were living the way God had intended then there would be no divisions. Christ was crucified because of the weakness of the flesh. In our weakest point, this is the best time for God’s strength to be seen in our lives. God has given us new life. But we have to confirm it. If Christ is in you, then the authority is in you. We don’t need to seek approval if we are walking with God. We may fail Him at times, but God is still there.
If we are like the Father, we will be doing things for the benefit of others. With the image of Christ, we will be able to forgive and strengthen others to return to God. We belong to one family. We may think differently but we are brothers. We are to accept what Christ has done and walk with Him. The Trinity is in us. That’s how great God is. We are challenged to prove the will of God in our lives.
